Volume 25 of the Annual Review of Nutrition is my first as editor. Equally sharing editorial duties for this volume were Dennis Bier and Barbara Bowman as associate editors. The extremely high ISI® ranking of the Annual Review of Nutrition is due to standards established by past editors Don McCormick, Bob Olson, and Bill Darby. Throughout its 25-year history, this Annual Reviews series has adhered to the mission of providing "critical authoritative reviews" that cover the spectrum of nutrition research from molecules to populations. Suggestions for topics are generated by an editorial committee, which includes term and ad hoc members. For volume 25, this committee was composed of Raymond Burk, Stephen Goodman, Dale Romsos, Steven Zeisel, former editor Don McCormick, and the current editors.

The prefatory chapter in this Annual Review of Nutrition volume is by David Kritchevsky. Rather than taking an autobiographical approach, Kritchevsky, with coauthor Martin Eastwood, describes evolution in the understanding of dietary fiber. McGuinness describes how glucose metabolism dysregulates during infection, and Newburg and coauthors discuss the relationship between milk glycans and protection against enteric pathogens. Dietary approaches to the treatment of insulin-resistance syndrome are reviewed by Reaven, and pediatric obesity and insulin resistance are discussed by Cruz and colleagues. Developmental roles of essential fatty acids are discussed by Heird and Lapillonne; how fatty acids regulate genes of lipid metabolism is described by Sampath and Ntambi; Corella and Ordovas discuss how diet influences genes of lipid metabolism that have single nucleotide polymorphisms; and Dark describes how lipid cycles influence physiology and behavior in hibernators. The neurobiology of energy intake and meal frequency is presented by Mattson, and the cow as a model of food intake regulation is described by Allen and coworkers. Nutrition-genomic approaches have been described by Kilberg and coauthors to define how cells respond to amino acid limitation; Shay and Banz describe how some botanicals regulate gene transcription; and a discussion of Drosophila as a model for human gene-nutrient effects is presented by Ruden et al. Mechanisms of vitamin A absorption are reviewed by Harrison, and regulation of vitamin C transport is discussed by Wilson. Reviews are also presented by Berkner on vitamin K-dependent carboxylase; by Zempleni on noncarboxylase roles of biotin; and by Singh et al. on vitamin E oxidative stress and inflammation. How phosphorus homeostasis is regulated via a Na-phosphate cotransporter is discussed by Tenenhouse; and Burk and Hill review the influence of selenoprotein P on selenium metabolism. Nutrient effects on redox regulation in cancer cells is presented by McEligot et al., and developmental determinants of blood pressure is reviewed by Adair and Dahly.

Finally, we need to thank the entire staff at Annual Reviews, but particularly Lisa Dean, our Production Editor, for her work throughout the year, and Sam Gubins, Annual Reviews President.
